The Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 was the first modern war in Europe. It took place at the dawn of a new era marked by huge advances in infantry and artillery weaponry. The ineptitude of the French commanders contrasted sharply with the brilliance and professionalism of the Prussian generals. The final stages of the war would see the French capital besieged by Prussian troops and eventually throw France into a state of civil war.
