Halifax a Journey Through Time 1900-1999, originally issued as a two-part VHS compilation, makes available for the first time on DVD format a unique compilation of vivid images reflecting the momentous changes experienced by the people of Halifax during the twentieth century. These images were captured on film by local cine enthusiasts, many of whom became associated with the Halifax Cine Club, founded in 1937. The historic footage includes evocative views of the changing townscape, rare glimpses into both the everyday life and the high days and holidays of the local community from the first filmed royal visit to Halifax of Princess Mary in 1925 to the first visit of her great-nephew Prince Charles in 1987. It sets these developments within the context of earlier pioneering developments in film technology in the first quarter of the twentieth century and concludes with panoramic views of the town in the 1990s. It explores the decline of the town’s manufacturing industries, the growth of the service sector and tourism, changing patterns of recreation and leisure and the impact of World War, increasing traffic and clean air legislation on the life of the local community.
